My Entrepreneurship Story
My father is a small business owner who founded European Woodart Corporation here in Florida. So it is true to say that I have spent my entire life in the presence of entrepreneurship, through the successfulness of it is regularly in dispute. Because I have experienced this my entire life (as far as I remember) I have no idea what “normal” experience to compare it against to see what was distinct about it. Ultimately I can only say that I was raised in a household that placed a premium on a good work ethic, though this is likely responsible for my parents entrepreneurship rather than a result of it.

I enrolled in this class because I am a part of the innovation academy. I enrolled in the innovation academy because when I read that it came with the “small college feel” that I so enjoyed I actually thought that is what this was. Suffice it to say I will read the fine print more carefully in future. What I hope to get out of this class, is an A. Outside of that I am hoping, but not expecting, to learn something new and useful. I freely admit that if I were not in innovation academy I would be taking poli-sci, history or philosophy classes almost exclusively. Having spoken with other IA students and taken some of these classes before I have learned to temper my expectations. However, as always, I am more than willing to give the benefit of the doubt and hope for a surprise.

  1. Hey Volodymyr, that is incredible that your family has their own small business. I also loved hearing about how you were raised to tackle life with a good work ethic. So much of our generation wants things to come easy, so it is nice to know that there are people out there that are willing to give it all it takes to accomplish what they want in life. When you mentioned that you enjoy that small college feeling, I can absolutely agree with you. All of the classes I’m taking this semester at UF are so packed that I have to sit on the floor in order to physically be present in the class. Best of luck with everything and have a great day.

  2. It’s cool that you’ve been exposed to entrepreneurship and it seems like you have awareness of more than the just the glamour of entrepreneurship. It’s easy to look at entrepreneurs to try understanding their success but I think actual experience is invaluable. I’ve recently gotten into woodworking and I think it’s awesome that you grew up in that environment. Did you dabble in either the business or craftsmanship aspect of the European Woodart Corporation? What was your exposure to woodworking? I’m working on building a fold-able desk so if have any tips or suggestions let me know.

    1. Thanks Jon!
Honestly, woodworking was never for me. My dad is not like some stereotypes where he just wanted me to grow up and take over the business. My parents saw a talent for law and politics early on and turned me in that direction. I can try to ask my dad for some tips for you though (he is in Ukraine on vacation) if you like.
